If you're anything like me, your weekends are planned around your dog’s tail wags and happy sniffs. Luckily, the Geelong and Surf Coast region is packed with stunning, dog-friendly spots where you and your best mate can soak up the scenery together.
As a pet photographer who’s recently landed in this beautiful part of Victoria, I’ve been scouting all the best local locations – not just for fun, but for capturing the magic between dogs and their people. In this blog, I’m sharing my top five places to explore with photo tips included, so you can create lasting memories… and maybe even get a few Insta-worthy shots while you’re at it.
1. Point Addis Beach (Anglesea) – Wild and Wonderful
Off-lead fun in the sand dunes and wide open beach with cliff backdrops – this spot is a dream for adventure dogs.
📸 Photo Tip:
Go during golden hour (an hour after sunrise or before sunset). The soft, warm light will make your dog’s coat glow and the backdrop shine.
🐾 Local Pit Stop:
Afterwards, head into Torquay and grab a seat at The Salty Dog Café. It's right by Fisherman's Beach and perfect for dogs to chill out while you enjoy a great coffee.
2. Barwon Heads Bluff Walk – Coastal Views & Calm Energy
This cliff-top walk offers sweeping ocean views and is a favourite for relaxed strolls with well-socialised dogs on lead.
📸 Photo Tip:
Have your dog sit or stand facing into the wind for those "windswept explorer" portraits. Try crouching down to their level for a more intimate feel.
🐾 Local Pit Stop:
On your way back, pop into one of the local cafés in town – many offer dog-friendly outdoor seating. Or take a short drive to The Kiosk Torquay for a relaxed bite with beach views.
3. Eastern Beach, Geelong – Iconic and Close to Home
With wide walking paths, grassy areas, and dog-friendly cafés nearby, this is the perfect urban adventure spot.
📸 Photo Tip:
Use architectural features (like the bollards or steps) as natural frames. Get a mix of portraits and candid shots as your dog explores.
🐾 Local Pit Stop:
You’re spoilt for choice here. Try Edge Geelong for waterfront dining with dog-friendly decking, or Sailors' Rest for a breezy outdoor brunch just across from the water.
4. Torquay Foreshore & Deep Creek Trail – A Local Favourite
A mix of beach and bushland, this trail is a hidden gem with photo-worthy moments around every corner.
📸 Photo Tip:
In shaded spots, avoid harsh midday light. Overcast days are your friend here – they give even, soft light that’s flattering for fur.
🐾 Local Pit Stop:
Fuel up afterwards at Bomboras, a relaxed spot with dog-friendly outdoor seating just across from the beach.
5. Breamlea Beach – Peaceful & Less Crowded
A quieter stretch perfect for dogs who love to run or just chill by the shoreline.
📸 Photo Tip:
Try capturing your dog mid-run or with their reflection in the wet sand. Use burst mode on your phone or camera for action shots.
🐾 Local Pit Stop:
Breamlea itself is pretty quiet, so it’s a great excuse to head back into Torquay for a coffee and snack. Both The Salty Dog Café and The Kiosk Torquay are dog-welcoming and close by.
